When you picture a large convention centre, sustainability may not be the first thing that comes to mind. But the RBC Convention Centre Winnipeg offers a strong reminder that even large-scale venues can take meaningful steps to reduce their environmental impact.

Last week, Leadership Winnipeg had the opportunity to visit the Centre and learn more about the initiatives behind its operations. Spanning 260,000 square feet across two city blocks (a detail they’re very proud of), the facility has earned LEED Silver certification—an achievement that reflects its commitment to energy efficiency, water use, air quality, and thoughtful building design.

Much of this success comes down to how the building runs day to day. The Centre uses hybrid heating systems that automatically adjust based on demand, helping reduce both energy consumption and emissions. Waste reduction is another key focus. With thousands of meals prepared regularly, the team has implemented robust recycling and composting programs, and partners with local organizations to donate surplus food rather than letting it go to waste.

Alongside these larger initiatives, there are small but impactful choices built into everyday operations. The Centre has reduced its reliance on single-use plastics, uses digital signage to cut back on printed materials, and operates energy-efficient lighting throughout the space. One of the more unique features is the beehives on the roof, which support pollination in the downtown area while producing small batches of local honey.

Rather than treating sustainability as a one-time effort, the RBC Convention Centre has made it part of how events are hosted and how the building functions overall. It’s a good example of how even high-traffic, large-scale venues can make progress when sustainability is treated as a priority—not just an add-on.
