As part of Leadership Winnipeg, our cohort spent February 20th exploring innovation and technology across three very different, yet surprisingly connected, organizations: North Forge FabLab, Magellan Aerospace, and RCAF 17 Wing. Each stop revealed a distinct dimension of how creativity and problem-solving come to life in our city.
We began at North Forge FabLab, a space where creative individuals are given the tools and support to bring their ideas to life. This community-driven, cooperative workshop is equipped with resources such as 3D printers, laser cutters, CNC machines, and electronics stations, essentially everything a maker or early-stage entrepreneur could hope to access.
What stood out most was not the equipment, but the culture. Fab Lab invites people in, whether hobbyists or local start-ups, to experiment, fail, learn, and try again within a supportive and collaborative environment. Watching small businesses bring early concepts to life underscored how critical spaces like this are to Winnipeg’s entrepreneurial ecosystem. FabLab is a community of like-minded, adventurous individuals whose collective energy is greater than the sum of its parts.
From there, we shifted to experiencing large-scale precision at Magellan Aerospace. Touring the facility offered a close look at how major aircraft components come together, particularly in their horizontal tail production. The contrast between Magellan and Fab Lab was striking. Where Fab Lab nurtures early ideas, Magellan demonstrates what happens when those ideas mature into highly refined, world-class manufacturing. Through the combination of engineering, robotics, materials science, and skilled trades, Winnipeg continues to demonstrate its strength as a hub for advanced aerospace innovation.
Our final stop of the day brought us to RCAF 17 Wing, where we learned how communication teams train to deploy into some of Canada’s most remote areas during floods, wildfires, and other natural disasters. Seeing the mobile communication setups and hearing how quickly teams can establish connectivity on the ground revealed another dimension of innovation: adaptability, preparedness, and service. The advanced technology at RCAF 17 Wing protects our communities and ensures critical operations continue when they are needed most.
Although each organization operates in significantly different contexts, the day came together as a cohesive story of innovation in Winnipeg.
North Forge FabLab sparks ideas and helps them take shape.
Magellan Aerospace transforms highly refined concepts into global aerospace components.
RCAF 17 Wing applies technology in real time to serve and protect our communities.
Individually, each represents an important facet of our city. Collectively, they illustrate how innovation thrives at every level in our community, from grassroots creativity to global manufacturing to mission-critical operations.
We left feeling inspired and proud of what is being imagined, built, and achieved right here at home.
