Our Advocacy in Canada
At the federal level, The Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce works directly with Parliamentarians, senior officials, national business coalitions, and through our membership in the Canadian Global Cities Council to elevate Winnipeg’s profile and advance policies that support sustainable economic growth.
Our Federal Priorities
- Trade and Cross-Border Relations
- We continue to press for a stable, reliable Canada–U.S. trade relationship. This includes sustained engagement with U.S. stakeholders to ease trade tensions, resolve disputes quickly, and ensure secure and equitable cross-border mobility for goods and workers.

- Business Relief, Procurement, and Infrastructure
- Federal support for business must be timely and targeted, with tax relief and financial assistance that reflect the realities of different sectors. We also call for investment in critical trade infrastructure, including rail, highways, and border crossings, and for these systems to be designated as essential services to ensure reliability during labour disputes. Federal procurement should prioritize Canadian suppliers to strengthen domestic supply chains.

- Sustainability and the Circular Economy
- The federal government has a key role to play in advancing the circular economy. This includes partnering with cities like Winnipeg to fund sustainable infrastructure, from waste systems to active and public transit, and ensuring that support for circular business models is inclusive and accessible to all communities.

- Workforce and Immigration
- Federal immigration programs must align more closely with labour market needs. Streamlining skilled-worker programs and coordinating with provinces on credential recognition would allow qualified newcomers to begin working sooner, addressing urgent workforce gaps.

- Downtown Revitalization and Economic Growth
- Federal investment is needed to support Winnipeg’s downtown recovery. Projects like transit expansion, net-zero building development, and tourism infrastructure contribute to a more resilient, economically vibrant urban core.
- Affordable Housing
- To expand housing supply, the federal government should offer low-interest loans for developers building or converting properties into affordable housing. It must also lead the harmonization of building codes to support mixed-use, climate-resilient, and net-zero housing development.
