ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Jim Ludlow served as President and CEO of True North Sports & Entertainment Limited from the inception of the company in 1999. During that time the MTS Centre, now the Canada Life Centre, grew to become one of the busiest concert venues in North America, served as the home of the AHL’s Manitoba Moose and in 2011 became the home of the NHL’s Winnipeg Jets. In mid 2015 in an effort to advance and develop a variety of commercial and real estate opportunities for True North and its investee companies, expand the business footprint of True North and add to Winnipeg’s physical and business landscape Jim took on a further leadership role as President of True North Real Estate Development Limited.
In early 2016, True North Real Estate Development Limited announced an ambitious mixed use real estate development for Winnipeg. True North Square is a $600 million private sector development, with a footprint of over one million square feet which has helped redefine the “Heart of Downtown”. True North Square has attracted a number of high profile Canadian tenants including Thompson Dorfman Sweatman LLP, MNP LLP – leading Winnipeg law and accounting firms, Scotiabank – Canada’s leading hockey bank, WLC, BDC, ACUL, True North & The Winnipeg Jets and SkipTheDishes, among others.
In June of 2019 True North announced another significant development for Winnipeg and True North Square with the addition of the new 350,000 square foot North American headquarters of the Wawanesa Mutual Insurance Company which officially opened in February of 2024.
The final piece of True North Square will be the completion of the Sutton Place Hotel, under construction and to be operated by Northlands Properties Corporation.
Again and in 2024 True North committed to a nationally significant 1.2 million square foot $650 million urban redevelopment plan for Portage Place to include multi-family market and affordable housing, community retail and parkade spaces, public and green spaces and a leading Healthcare Centre for Excellence – as part of its overall strategic downtown Winnipeg development plan.
Significant to this campus redevelopment plan, True North is also very proud of its strategic partnership with the Southern Chiefs Organization on the construction of TN-SCO 92 Inc., a 15-storey residential building that affirms a commitment to Canada’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s call to action for economic reconciliation.
Prior to coming to True North, Jim was a partner with a senior Western Canadian law firm, practicing in the areas of corporate finance, mergers and acquisitions, and previous to that the Vice-President of Corporate Development and General Counsel to a leading Canadian venture capital firm based in Calgary, Alberta.
Born and raised in Winnipeg, Jim attended the University of Manitoba, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree and Osgoode Hall Law School in Toronto, where he received his Law degree.
